Storytelling Night at Nature House May 30, 2012

Filed under: Events,Friends of Reston — friendsofreston @ 2:14 pm

Tickets are still available for our storytelling show on Saturday, June 2nd. The first show is at 7PM and the encore show is at 9PM.  Come out for a night of true personal stories for adults. All proceeds benefit Friends of Reston.

Last year, Friends of Reston gave scholarships to 15 local children so they could attend summer camp, something which they would not otherwise have been able to afford.  It costs approximately $450 to send one child to camp. Our goal for this event is $1350, or three scholarships.  We only need to sell 90 tickets to the event to make that goal.  We can easily do that with your help.   Hope to see you there.

Better Said Than Done, Northern Virginia’s premiere storytelling troupe, shares true, personal stories of all the good, the bad, and the ugly things we do to our bodies and ourselves.

8th Annual Fund Run May 18, 2011

On April 30, Mother Nature sang a sweet tune. With sunny skies and temperatures in the 70’s, nearly 800 people visited the nature center to participate in the 8th Annual 5K Fund Run and Spring Festival.

In the morning, 161 people crossed the finish line at the race, which raised nearly $7,000 for Nature House. Participants ranged in age from 5 to 87 years old. The top male finisher was Kevin Bell; the top female finisher was Andie Diaz, and the top youth finisher was Lars Kolankiewicz.

The afternoon brought hundreds of festival goers of all ages. They bought native plants, took boats out on Lake Audubon, met live animals and enjoyed 27 information and activity booths. The Reston Community Center sponsored a puppet show by Bob Brown Puppets that packed the multipurpose room, and a performance by the South Lakes High School String Quartet that filled Nature House with music as beautiful as the birds chirping outside the windows.

Friends of Reston hosted a nature and children’s book drive to raise money for RA Camps scholarships. Patrons were encouraged to take lightly used book home and leave a donation. $1,100 was raised. Some books still need to go to their next home. You can browse through them at Nature House during the month of May. Nature House is open Mon. and Wed.-Fri. 9-5 as well as Sat. 10-1 and Sun. 1-4.

Thanks to all of the volunteers and staff who worked to make these events so successful. Photos can be seen on the Reston Association Facebook page.

Another Nature House Success April 11, 2011

Our second night of storytelling was a big success.  Once again, the fundraiser raised nearly $1000 for the Walker Nature Education Center.  More importantly, though, the shows were both really well received by the audiences and the storytellers put on a great performance.

Special thanks to our host, storyteller, and the person who brought storytelling nights to the Nature House, Jessica Piscitelli.  And thanks to all the great storytellers from the show: Adam Ruben, Meredith Maslich, Jennifer Luu, Jason Pittman, Kevin Boggs, Katie Kelly, and Joseph Price.

Once again thanks to Doug Fuller for the poster and flier design, and thanks to all the Friends of Reston who came out and worked that evening or showed support by spreading the word or attending the event.

It wouldn’t have been so successful without a lot of help!
